Your Out!

I believe that the banishing of the glader Ben was a very important scene in the young adult novel “The Maze Runner.” This event was included in the telling of the story because we get to see just how dedicated to the idea, and the importance the band of boys place on the idea, of maintaining order. When Ben is ‘changed’ he remembers awful things about what life was before getting sent to the maze, and a theory I have been considering could be that perhaps the creators were controlling Ben. Much like what is assumed to happen to Alby later on. What if the creators where controlling Ben in order to test Thomas to see how he would react. The reason why however, I suppose is really of minor significance. Despite Ben’s motivation or manipulation to kill Thomas he is not the monster of the story, nor this sequence of events. The monsters are the ‘creators’, for placing Ben and all the others in an environment of such unthinkable circumstances. Through it all though the boys of the glade are actually doing a fairly good job of creating a sustainable civilization and I think that it is one of the main things that keeps everyone from going mental as Ben did. This is why the banishing must take place. Just like in our society if personal freedoms and liberties are being threatened by someone then they must be held accountable and suffer the consequences.

I couldn’t agree with this statement more: “The monsters are the ‘creators’, for placing Ben and all the others in an environment of such unthinkable circumstances.” I don’t think that the boys are monsters, i think they are the product of their society and the “creators.” They have no life outside of the Glade or the Maze, so they know they have to keep some semblance of order to survive the society that they’ve been thrust into with no memory of who they were.
